Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden

April 30, 2018

Last week I went to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to check out some Cherry Blossoms, and although most trees are still pre-bloom, a couple were blooming!

The magnolias were also in bloom, and the tulips were spectacular. Sadly I didn't see the tulips until I was on my way out, but I took a lot of photos so maybe I'll do a studio painting sometime!

I spent Saturday in Prospect Park with NYC Urban Sketchers. I started with this sketch of a statue of Abe Lincoln. I think he ended up looking more like Teddy Roosevelt. Sorry, Abe, I'm not sure that's a trade up!

In the pond in Prospect Park (a favorite place of mine, I can kayak five minutes from my door!), there is a large turtle population and they love sunning themselves on the rocks. Seriously, could these turtles be any happier?

I moved on to the Prospect Park Boathouse, sketching the nearby waterfall first followed by the bridge. Although I've never sketched the bridge itself before, I have sketched ON the bridge. It was nice to get the opposing view!

Last I did a quick half hour sketch of the Camperdown Elm, which was planted in 1872!
