Lower Manhattan

I love sketching in Lower Manhattan. There are so many different options and opportunities there! Here are two favorite views, done a couple of weeks ago enjoying some fresh spring weather.

This is Doyer Street, in Chinatown. It was once the murder capital of NYC, back when the area was full of opium dens and gangs would capture rivals in the sharp curve of the street. It's also said that the area had a lot of secret passages through the buildings that could be utilized by individuals who were up to no-good! Now it is the location of a popular dim sum restaurant.

This is a view I stumbled across on the way to brunch one morning, and you may remember it from this studio painting. This was my first shot sketching it on location! The ornate building once housed the headquarters for the NYC police department.
